Who are Believers according to Quran?

Surah At-Tawba: Ayah 112

"They who turn (to Allah), who serve (Him), who praise (Him), who fast, who bow down, who prostrate themselves, who enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, and who keep the limits of Allah; and give good news to the believers."

Surah Al-Muminun : Ayah 1-11

"Successful indeed are the believers, Who are humble in their prayers, And who keep aloof from what is vain, And who are givers of poor-rate, And who guard their private parts, Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blamable, But whoever seeks to go beyond that, these are they that exceed the limits; And those who are keepers of their trusts and their covenant, And those who keep a guard on their prayers; These are they who are the heirs, Who shall inherit the Paradise; they shall abide therein."

Surah Ash-Shura : Ayah 36-38

"So whatever thing you are given, that is only a provision of this world's life, and what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who believe and rely on their Lord. And those who. shun the great sins and indecencies, and whenever they are angry they forgive. And those who respond to their Lord and keep up prayer, and their rule is to take counsel among themselves, and who spend out of what We have given them. "

Surah An-Nur : Ayah 30-31

"Say to the believing men that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely Allah is Aware of what they do. And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful."

So, it appears that "Believers according to Quran" are those who keep women as sex slaves. Correct?

Your understanding of what 'it appears to be' is not correct.

So someone enlighten me. What does the following passage in the koran mean?

And who guard their private parts, Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess,

Who are these people that the "right hands possess"? Any why are muslim males allowed to expose their private parts to them???

reepi, I think Jennifer already asked you to search rather than hijacking a thread. Of course Ummz's patience is Mash aAllah is highly appreciated. However, reepi, do a search on this same board, and you will find many discussions regarding your question, that you might have even been part of. I think you were. And when you find the threads, let us know. :)

umm Zachariah, according to your first link:

"...opening the door for female slaves or captives to be married by destitute Muslims...

Perhaps. But a muslim slave owner can have sex with his slaves whether or not he is married to them. In fact, according to the koran, the slave owner can have sex with his female slaves even if the slave is married to someone else. I find this belief offensive in the extreme.

According to your second link:

Also, the Prophet's mission was not to eradicate slavery, but to establish rights and bring people to the point of being able to eradicate it from their own hearts first before they eradicated it from society.

Slavery was practiced in Saudi Arabia until 1962, and the only reason it was eliminated is that President Kennedy put intense pressure on the Saudi government to stop this vile practice. So, then, it appears that even 1300 years was an insufficiant period of time for Arab muslims to eradicate slavery "from their own hearts".

Since the end of slavery was forced upon Arabs, and not given up by choice, I have no doubt that Arabs would legalize slavery again in a second if there was a wayfor them to do so. Besides, as all of us know, the treatment of many of the foreign workers in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries is little better than slavery.

In addition to the near slavery which is still practiced in Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar, actual slavery is still practiced by muslims in Mauritania (which is 100% muslim) and Sudan (which is 70% muslim).

Waalikum assalaam,

Yes, that was the intention exactly. Insha Allah if anybody has any other ayah or hadith on the topic it could be put here for the same purpose. I hope any other side topics could be discussed on a separate thread. Jazak Allah khairn.

Insh aAllah I m contributing to the original post :biggrinlove: you know those are my favorite topics::

But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.(Quran 4:65)

And of humankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe, love Allah more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is Severe in punishment.

Surah Al-Anfal: verse 2

For, believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened, and put (all) their trust in their Lord (alone).

I think there is a need to understand the difference between the Quranic usage of "muslim" and "momin".

Muslim as we all know is one who surrenders, a very basic level of faith.

Momin is commonly translated into "believer" wich is misleading. For example one can believe in Satan, but he cannot be a "momin" to Satan. A better translation is perhaps "faithful"

A Momin is a rank higher than a muslim as illustrated by the Quranic verse:

قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا قُل لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَكِن قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ

The dwellers of the desert say: We believe. Say: You do not believe but say, We submit; and faith has not yet entered into your hearts;

Note when the A'raab or nomadic arabs claimed to be "momin" they were told to refrain and simply claim the status of "muslim".

I can see a very good seed for a new thread, we can follow the adjectives given by Allah to those who believe in Allah the way Allah Commanded and introduce supportive Ayahs and hadeeth.

See if jennifer or Karbala wants to start the thread on the Islam room.

Jazakum Allah khairan

Insh a Allah turning the light on this thread, those topics are really good exercise.

Regarding the word believing, Karbala, we are talking about those who believer according to Ayahs from Quran, If you read the Quran and follow the positions when Allah Described those who believe, it will be very clear that the word refers to those who believe in Allah as follows:

"And of humankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe, love Allah more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is Severe in punishment." (Quran 2: 165)

"And when you have divorced women and they have fulfilled the term of their prescribed period, do not prevent them from marrying their (former) husbands, if they mutually agree on reasonable basis. This (instruction) is an admonition for him among you who believes in Allah and the Last Day. That is more virtuous and purer for you. Allah knows and you know not." (Quran 2:232)

"And ordain for us good in this world, and in the Hereafter. Certainly we have turned unto You." He said: (As to) My Punishment I afflict therewith whom I will and My Mercy embraces all things. That (Mercy) I shall ordain for those who are pious and give Zakah; and those who believe in Our Signs;*Those who follow the Messenger (Muhammad), the unlettered Prophet whom they find written in the Torah and the Gospel with them, he enjoins upon them that which is virtuous and forbids them that which is evil; he allows them all that is good and forbids for them all that is foul. And he releases them from their burdens and from the shackles that were upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, assist him and follow the light which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful." (Quran 7:156-157)

"The true believers are only those, who believe in (the Oneness of) Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), and when they are with him on some common matter, they go not away until they have asked his permission. Verily! Those who ask your permission, those are they who (really) believe in Allah and His Messenger. So if they ask your permission for some affairs of theirs, give permission to whom you will of them, and ask Allah for their forgiveness. Truly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Quran 24:62)
